The first product of the brewery, this beer is dark golden in color with an off white, persistent head. Grainy/malty aromas dominate the nose, with hop overtones almost too faint to detect. The taste mostly malty as well, very clean and slightly sweet, again with faint hoppiness. Overall a pleasant enough lager.
It is unfortunate that it's necessary to label a bock "true bock," but labeling laws the way they are in this country, I suppose that this is the only way to let beer drinkers know what they're getting into. This copper colored beer with vague gold highlights has a very malty nose and a sweetly malty flavor with strong alcoholic character. Rich Munich malts dominate the flavor. In keeping with style, hop character is undetectable. I find this beer to be strong enough to remind me of several of the double bocks I've encountered. Altogether a very fine product, and well worth sampling.
While based in Austin, much, if not all, of the brewery's production is carried out under contract by the August Schell Brewing Co., New Ulm, MN.
