- This is the north-bay edition of the late, great Twenty Tank that used to exist over in SF.
- Charles Bowen (cmb@uts.cc.utexas.edu) reports:
I used to work there, pretty good beer. In fact some of 'em are damn good.
(I am a bit partial to the Red Rock Ale, but I would guess the Tree frog
ale is the most popular.)
Only beer they serve is what they make on premise, you can see the tanks
in big windows facing the tables. Decent size place, an upstairs terrace
that is open in nice weather. Old style shuffle board table with regualr
tournaments. Small kitchen, sandwiches, chile, and nachos. Not too bad.
Couple TVs, usually sports on it. Juke box with a bunch of weird music.
All in all, good place to get some good beer, quiet, but not much chance
of gett'n laid though.

hour (on a Saturday!). The deal was half-price appetizers and 2-dollar pints
or 4 samplers for $2.00. Here's my rating: Blonde
Bombshell Pilsner - Definitely not a Czech pilsener as I could detect no hop
flavor at all. A disappointing Bud-like beer. Brewzer's Red Ale - Very good,
a roasted, nutty flavor. Muddy Waters Brown Ale - Made with some brown sugar and caramel, it was a little thin,
but smooth. Raspberry Wheat - Unfiltered, excellent raspberry aroma and
flavor. Definitely the pick of the litter here. Ale House Stout - I'm sorry,
but this is not a stout. Very thin and watery and hardly any dark roasted
flavor. It's not unpleasant, just don't call it a stout. Hefeweizen -
Unfiltered, was described as having clove spiciness, but I could not detect
it or any other wheat beer characteristics. Rather watery.

brews on tap under a new brewmaster. The Bad Ass Ale has a Marzen type flavor w/a pungeant
aftertaste. The Stout has a heavy coffee taste. Full bodied with no aftertaste to speak of. The
IPA (my favorite) was sweet and smooth. Better than average. Alpine Amber (Wendy's fovorite) has a
honey-nut brown flavor w/a malty aftertaste. Needle Peak Ale was light w/a hint of lemon flavor.
Washoe Wheat Ale was "very light" with no significant taste to speak of.
The bar is in brass w/oak and Seats 7. There is a seperate dining area serving pizza and salad.

- Chuck Sheldon, (skitime3@cs.com) reports: Located on the corner of Lake Mary & Minaret, Mammoth brewery is upstairs from the Whiskey Creek Mountain Bistro. Immersed in a
Friday night bar atmosphere, this brewery has a middle name and it is PARTY! The food is your typical brewery fare, (burgers etc.) though
the portions and quality make the biggest impression. When we were there last they had eight brews on tap. The Pale Ale is a classic California
Pale, using pale malt, caramel and wheat, Chinook and Cascade hops and is not as overpowering as some other Pale Ales out there. The Golden
utilizes Cascade and Willamette hops and has a light body with a smooth finish. The Amber mixes several malts including Marries Otter 2-row
and Munich, Hvan Baird Caramel malt. English Challenger hops top off this malty American Amber. The Double Nutt Brown is rich and full with
a pleasant aroma. Leaning more towards a Porter than a Brown, the chocolate malt really brings it all together and my pick of the day!!
Purple Haze is an American wheat beer made with FRESH blackberries and served unfiltered. This one was Wendyâs pick of the day and night!!
The Irish Stout as with other rotating specials including Doppelbock and Raspberry Wheat are not to be missed. Will Erickson is the Brew master
and works diligently to ensure that everything is just right. If you get the opportunity to share a Friday night with him as we did, you will
see that this is a man who has found his calling. Kyle Anderson is the bar manager and was A GREAT HELP with all the extra's.
Live music really caps off the party, and if you are fortunate enough to see Sticky Fingers while there, you will see why this is the place to
be in Mammoth after a great day on the slopes. If you are looking for fine dining, you need look no further than the Whiskey Creek Bistro,
located downstairs. the food and service were impeccable. Thank's again to everyone for a unforgettable time!! We will return. Rating 1-10 (10)

aftertaste, my kind of beer. Rye Gin Ale - I can definitely taste the rye,
not a bad beer. Brewhound Red Ale - Very malty, but without any hop
aftertaste. My favorite was the Golden Eagle Premium, you just can't beat
the taste of Saaz hops in a well-made beer. Got a fast word about the food

brewery food).

Chuck Sheldon, (skitime3@cs.com) reports:Located one block from the Cypress and I-5 offramp, this quaint brew pub has a originality that is hard to match. Although there is no food
served, the beer and atmosphere make up for it. We had the luck of visiting on Halloween and as we found, when it comes to a reason to party,
this is it! The bar itself is adorned with wood confiscated from an old mission in Santa Cruz. The seats are made from kneelers and oak pews.
Even the overhead beams and tap mounts are made from the imported church wood. Bill Ward is the owner and has prided himself for over eight
years with bringing in the best brews around including; EEL River Ravens Brau, and Deschute's Black Butte Porters, Wyder Pear (Canada)
and Ciderjack CranBerry (Vermont) CidersNorth Coast Old Stock Ale Barley winesâ and many more totaling 20 brews on tap at a time with NO
domestics. The customer base drives the music selection, as a computer in the middle of the bar is a help-yourself jukebox and works
nicely. Great place to grab a pint if you're in the area!! Rating 1-10 (7)

did not get to enjoy the gardens, but it looked wonderfully
landscaped. Exact same menu and brew as the Old Columbia Brewery
downtown but in a better location.
Brew varied from good to better than average. Way too many lighter
beers on the menu---the stout was good, but lacked any strong
roasted flavor. Food was average.
- (BP) Karl Strauss' Old Columbia 1157 Columbia 619-234-BREW
- Dave Shaver (shaver@healthcare.com)says: Helpful to note this place is downtown on Columbia. The map I had

specific items I had on the menu here (reuben sandwich and roasted

several others on draught. Unpretentious, friendly, good beer.

- Comments from Frank J. Leers (fjl@dpci.sannet.gov): "Brew their

food, reasonably priced, a LOT of beer to choose from.
- Tom Glaab(tglaab@clutter.com) reports:This place is
worth the short trip from downtown. They had seven house brews on the
board, and a variety of micros. There were a few token domestics too,
so you could bring your beer-illiterate friends...
The IPA is still available cask-conditioned; the Oatmeal stout was also
very good. I accidently ended up with their high octane special, "Old
395," which had a great flavor to it.
Interesting scenery includes a drawing of the Dilbert "Boss" on the beer
board saying "I want all of these beers tasted and a report on my desk

food they served was pre-made sandwiches. It was a really cool
retro-lounge-lizard sort of place, though, with red velvet seats with
high backs, that sort of thing. Looked very fancy, but was done in
a mocking sort of way. Apparantly they regularly feature some very
good live music, but we didn't stay around since we were hungry.
We both had the Erdinger Hefeweizen, imported from Germany.
Served in a proper Hefewiezen glass, but unfortunately it was very
off. It didn't really taste foul or bad, it was just definitely not the
taste of a Hefeweizen.

I tried all four on tap, and here's a short review:
Export: A light, not all that flavorful interpretation of a German
pilsner. Not something to seek out.
Marzen: Better, but not rich enough or malty enough for my taste. Too
many hops in my view for the Oktoberfest/Marzen style, but a good beer.
Dunkles: Very good, rich, malty, more hoppy than most other dunkles
I've had.
Hefeweizen: This was my favorite; very fruity, lots of phenolics and
fruity esters. Great, unfiltered beer. Worth travelling miles for.

almost half of them were not serving beer. They had a huge list
of all their beers, and another huge list of which ones were not
available at the moment. About 20 to 30 micros on tap. Nice
environment. Had a really old (37?) roadster inside. Live folk
music. In addition to not having many of the beers, they
had almost no seafood available, even though we were almost right
on the wharf. There was lots on the menu, but the waitress kept
saying "sorry, not available" when we asked for it. We figured you
have to have seafood down in that area. Apparantly they get
their order on Wednesdays, and we were unfortunate enough
to be there on a Tuesday evening. So we had to settle for
burgers and fries. Luckily they did have the Anchor Porter on
tap, and it definitely worth the rest of the misfortune we'd had there.
It wasn't as different from the bottled version as Steam on tap
is from it's counterpart, but it definitely had a fuller taste to it.

- (BP)The Magnolia Pub and Brewery 1398 Haight and Masonic (near Golden Gate Park in the Haight)
- To cut to the chase: Based on overall beer quality, Magnolia is the best brewpub I have ever had the pleasure to visit. 10-12 beers on tap at any time, consisits of 8-10 pub-brews plus a
guest beer or two (one cask-conditioned, usually). Quite simply magnificent beers. Cask IPA was well balanced but maintained a wonderfully fresh hoppiness. Cask "Cole Porter"
which ranked as one of the two or three best Porters I've ever had. Basically perfection for the classic style with some slightly aggressive grain-bill choices that leaned it
American but maintained the English style. Follow that with the stout that is, by far, the finest brewpub stout I have ever tried. On aroma alone the beer ranked high. Flavor was again perfected
with the perfect combination of roastiness offset with the lightest touch of sweetness. Also available on my visit was a Gruit, a beer brewed without hops that was certainly interesting, reminding
me of a spiced beer I made many years ago. Alt, Trippel, Pale and a Mild rounded out an extremely varied beer list on my visit. If you visit only one bar/brewpub on your visit to SF, make this one
it.
- Alan McKay (amckay@ottawa.com reports:was a rather small and very trendy little place. "Hippy"
sort of food in some regards. They had a very excellent Chili,
some exceptionally good sandwiches, and the mashed-potato
thing which I had was excellent, too. 7 or 8 of their own beers
on tap, a couple of which doubled as cask-conditioned as well.
They also had "guest beers" from other micros. I got to try
a Prohibition which I understand Jeffrey Donovan (a la Promash)
helps brew. It was my favorite beer of the evening, though I
did thoroughly enjoy all I tried. Will certainly come back here.

There is nothing wrong with the open floor plan upscale
brew pub style of eatery. That is if they pay attention to
the brewery part of the operation. They offer a variety of
clean drinking beers with the Golden Vanilla standing out
as making me question my personal feelings against
flavor additives in beer. The addition of vanilla into a summer
pale or wheat is a definite area for investigation.
- (P)Toronado 547 Haight St (near Fillmore) 415-863-2276
- Great little bar specializing in Belgian beers. Approximately 50 taps plus two or three hand-pulls. Two thirds of the taps are dedicated to Belgian beers, many of which
it is unusual to see in bottle (Cantillon, Van Steenberge and Petrus, among others, represented with multiple taps) served up in full and half-pint
servings. Further Belgian selections are available on bottle. Prices are reasonable, but the beers are so rare, price is really no consideration when faced with a selection of tap handles you can find
only in a handful of US locations. It boils down to this: If you like Belgian beers, even in a passing sense, do not leave San Francisco without visiting this bar at least once.
- Clif Moore (cmoore@gi.alaska.edu) repots:This fine hole in the wall is a
celebration of fine beer on tap. I have never seen
so many taps behind one bar. They are lined up
and stowed away in every part or the bar. They
offer micro brews and Belgian ales. This gives
an indication of the priority. The best beer the
world has to offer combined with the offerings
of the local environment. They are noted for
keeping their beer fresh and their lines clean and
offering good value for the beer drinking enthusiast.

- Chuck Sheldon, (skitime3@cs.com) reports:Seven beers on tap. Tryed the Kolch,it was a very light ale with a citrus finish. The Stout was dry and loaded with N2. very nice creamy head. The Pale was some of the best I have tasted. Good balance of hops and malt. The Best Bitter was not on the hoppy side.
Food portins are in the gourmet chef tradition, very tasty.
