- pembertn@bucknell.edu reports: I visited the Free State Brewery in Lawrence, KA last month (March)
It's got some pretty damn good food and great beers to go along with the food.
The food's cheap and the beer cheaper ($1.75/ pint) My recommendation is that w/ prices this low,
forego the little 4 oz. sampler, opting for a full pint sampler of each beer type, it's worth it believe me).
Also has a great little beer garden in back.
- Joe Crowe (jcrowe@isd.tandem.com)reports: One, the
food is excellent and does not cost much at all. Two,
the beer is excellent and does not cost much at all.
The combination could teach the Austin brewpub community
a lesson or two.
- Kelley Kirk, (dynabass@excite.com) reports: FreeState typically has about 10 beers on the menu at any one time, with 5 of those being regulars on the menu. My personal fave is Oatmeal Stout. Very rich, very full bodied with strong hints of coffee and chocolate. The John Brown Ale is basically Oatmeal Stouts little brother, and is incredible if you enjoy full, dark beers without the heaviness of stouts. Currently Brinkley's Maibock is on the menu to celebrate spring, and is a very complex medium bodied berr with a candy nose and rosey brown complexion. The beer is also available to take home in picnic jugs, or 'growlers' as we say around these parts, and has made me almost quit going to the liquor store. I have been a big fan of many, many beers (some gone by the wayside, fare thee well Celis and Zebra, I will miss you deeply) for many years, and I feel priveleged that I live near such a fine establishment. If you ever have a chance to meet the owner, Chuck, or the brew!
master, Steve, you will find two men absolutely dedicated to the art of non pasturized, fresh, natural beer. They even make some desert beers that are great with a cigar after a good meal (but, the alcohol content of these should keep you from drinking too many!!). I could wax eloquent for hours about FreeState, but I'll let you decide. Come one, come all to Lawrence and enjoy a pint with me!

msofive@aol.com reports: A quaint restraunt
and pub with a fantastic salad bar. Food is quite good considering the overall
lack of eateries in town. The beer should be the main consideration for visiting
the city. Their Rig Red Ale is smooth and goes good with the food. Try the sampler
"Flight of Six" for an overall taste of their malty style. The house stout great
and the barkeep does a good black and tan.
