- (BP) Abita Brewery Pub PO Box 762
- bobby bush (bobby@twave.net) reports: Located several miles from the
microbrewery, Abita Brewing has a small (maybe 7 barrels) brewing system where
the brewpub's seasonal beers are made for on-premise consumption and growlers to go.
When I visited on March 20, there were ten active tap handles. The strong, healthily
hopped Turbodog is my favorite, but others worth a pint or two include: Abita Amber,
Abita Bock, Andygator (a smooth barleywine) and a Pilsner, made with British Fuggles
hops. For the light-hearted Abita serves their Abita Golden, a fruity raspberry
Purple Haze and a low-calorie Abita 76. The aforementioned Pilsner, a somewhat
light, but smooth Stout and the highly recommended Three Grain Ale (made from barley,
wheat and rye malts, with 7% alcohol content) represented the seasonal offerings.
A great merchandise selection and a decent above-pubgrub menu made the one hour drive
across Lake Pontchartrain well worth the time and rental car investment.

Has a bar directly attached to the brewery.
- Mike Vachow (mvachow@newman.k12.la.us) reports:
Currently bottles a Vienna lager and a Pilsener. They brewed a helles bock last year that was available on tap at the brewpub.
Haven't heard what they have in the works this year. Their Vienna lager is brewed to style, a velvety deep red, malty beer
with chocolate notes. I think it's a damn fine beer. Best to have it at the pub, as, like many new micros, the stuff in
the bottle at the store may not be in prime condition. Acadian does date label their beers though, so consumers have a better
shot at getting the beer at its best when they go to the supermarket. Acadian's Golden Pilsener is a traditional Bohemian
pilsener-- round, malty mouthfeel and nose and carefully balanced, true-to-style hops. I won't blather about the helles bock because I think it's all gone now, but it was
big and delicious.

- LeeYNOLA@compuserve.com reports that this bar had over
200 beers by the bottle over fifteen years ago before all this was fashionable.
They have quietly amassed the single greatest local collection that I know of and
you can now get over 500 beers between draught and bottles. They were also one of
the first places I ever saw to have all their taps with auto rollover so that the
keg never blows. Larry the owner has been a fixture on the local tavern owner scene
for almost three decades and continues to astound with his variety. And of course
the food is great

- Derek Magill (dmagill@ccwf.cc.utexas.edu) reports: This is a very nice restaurant, offering both the best
in beer and food. In the back of the
attractively designed bar stands a large copper kettle
used for the in-house brewing. I had the blackforest
ale they made there on my last visit, and I regret that
they cannot bottle it for sale to the public. They offer
not only their in-house brews, but a wide selection of fine
beers from all over the country as well. The food is
upscale, fusing local New Orleans creole with the
modern California approach. If you like fine beer and
fine food, this is a must-see!
