  Dr. Howard K.Peters III (petersh@uthscsa.edu) reports: We found their fruit ale a bit wimpy ( after a 2 week vacation it doesn't even register). They had an Amber and Copper Ale which only a metallurgist I'm a microbiologist, could discerne. A stout which according to the bartender was a classic (to this) PhD's palette was a nice beer with a nice dry finish.

  Chuck Sheldon, (skitime3@cs.com) reports:Located on San Mateo just north of Montgomery, this is a "Must See" for the weary traveler. Friday/Saturday nights are packed! We are talking standing room only- There are so many girls that they are hanging from the walls...:) Definitely the singles crowd for 40 & under!!!! This establishment is a long bar, (hence the name) that is very narrow and long coming in at a whopping 200+ ft. There are two rooms at one end of the bar for dining, one of which has darts also. The Long Bar boasts the most beers on tap in New Mexico with 51,encompassing 10 states and 10 countries! They also claim to have 64 brands of single Malt Scotch...:0 Wendy particularly liked the "Oregon" Widmer hefe-Weizen w/lemon and I enjoyed the Red Hook Blonde Ale from Seattle Wa. Food is very good for a "party bar" although service is something to be desired. They offer a variety of food for lunch/dinner though lean towards the soup/salad/sandwich selection. We tried the Buffalo chicken sandwich and the Chicken Parmesan sandwich...both were delicious!!! Their Nacho appetizer can easily feed two- a! s well. Be careful to mind your P's -n- Q's as the bouncer's testosterone levels are high...watched several people be escorted out in the time we were there..:( Rating 1-10 (8)

  Chuck Sheldon, (skitime3@cs.com) reports:Good selection of beers, Atomic Blond ( alittle tinny tasting), Honeymoon Wheat (nice with a sweet after-taste)High Altitude Pale Ale (my favorite) and more...try their seasonals, Pumpkin Pie (awesome), and Black Cow (a very nice stout) Armagedon (7.7 alcohol, really packs a punch). They also have Plaza Porter( a dark beer with a chocolate flavor) and End Of The Trail Brown Ale ( a dark beer that is surprisingly light with a gentle malty flavor) Great selection of southwest mexican dishes and everything is served on or with blue corn tortillas! (hence the name) Staff is very friendly- If you stop in the bar, ask for Fletch..he is THE MAN! They also have Growlers* Definatly worth a visit, or two or three...:) Rating 1-10 (10)

  Chuck Sheldon, (skitime3@cs.com) reports:This brewery has seven beers on tap with three seasonals rotated in. Where the Helles Albuquerque is a Munich Helles Lager, made with imported Pilsen,Vienna malts and german hops...leaving a light aftertaste. The Badlands Biter is a British-style bitter with a pungent aftertaste. The Hang'em High dry Stout has strong coffee overtones and a hint of Rye for dryness- the body was "THIN" in comparison to any other Stouts around. The Yippee Kigh Eh PA was worth a pint as was the Lizard Spit IPA, excellent body with a smooth aftertaste!(and Wendy and my personal choice! ). Their seasonals cover a Chili Beer and a Buzzard Breath barleywine @9.3% ALC. The food was nothing to talk about except for the overly high prices. The menu consists of sandwiches/salads etc.) Wendy nor I was not impressed. Guy Ruth is the brewmaster/co-owner and is working hard to bring everything together. Only time will tell....   Chuck Sheldon, (skitime3@cs.com) reports:23 beers on tap including foreign and domestic. Also carries 150+ bottled brews encompassing 15 countries and 11 US states. They also have a separate package liquor dept. where you can purchase any of the 150+ bottled imports to go...they even have kegs- The restaurant atmosphere leans towards family dining. The food selection specializes in barbeque.... From your classic 1/2 rack and full rack of ribs to barbeque beef and chicken sandwiches- (tried the barbeque beef sandwich and it a meal and a half!) Wendy thought the Reuben was right on target (lots of sauerkraut) and David gave the chicken strips "two thumbs up". This is truly barbeque food at its finest. Wash it down with your favorite brew selection and your good to go..:) Closed Sundays- Rating 1-10 (9)

  Chuck Sheldon, (skitime3@comcast.net) reports: Located in front of the Santa Ana Star Casino on Highway 550 (just off I-25), you can immerse yourself in the hidden treasures of a well-kept secret! Adorned with large wooden beams and a patio that overlooks the Sandia Mountains, this is a great place to stop and enjoy the land of enchantment. There were seven micro?s on tap when I visited with friends and we tried all the offerings including: Milagro Silver (a Kolsh style German ale), Gold (American Pale Ale), Bronze (Brown Porter), and seasonals. The FallFest was my pick of the day, which had good gravity (OG 1.056), and a malty, toasty sweetness that had a smooth malt-hop balance. Their Platinum Blond (their mildest brew) is lightly malty, with a subtle hop balance (and Wendy?s pick of the day)! The atmosphere was relaxing, but not to be mistaken with their live music on the weekends which, pack the house?Food offerings range from casual, to elegant multi-coarse dining. Great place to stop by if you?re in area. We will r! eturn! Rating 1-10 (10)

  Terry Sunday (terry@brewingnews.com reports: The 12 beers run the gamut from light lager to hefty stout. Any are worth trying if you want to sample a particular style. My own perennial favorite is the Dark Bock, unless either the Imperial Stout or the Barleywine is on. Quality does vary some from batch to batch, however, and every once in a while you get one that's not up to par. Also, brewer Bob Gosselin continuously tinkers with the recipes, so consistency is not a High Desert strong suit. It's a funky, popular place, though, with a couple of real characters running things, so I think the loyal patrons are inclined to forgive minor variations in their beers.

  Chuck Sheldon, (skitime3@cs.com) reports:Located just 2 miles off I-25 and the Old Pecos Trail exit, this is a great watering hole/rest stop! There are 8 seats at the bar, with more seating in the dining area. The patio is the place to be on a hot summer day...14 tables allowing an "uncrowded feeling". There are usually 5 to 6 brews on tap at any given time, though there were only 4 when we were there. The Cream Stout is rich in chocolate and caramel w/roast flavors and hops. The Golden Ale is soft and smooth w/no real aftertaste to speak of- their "lightest brew on tap" and Wendy's favorite! The IPA is an multiple award winner...strong malty but dry finish. Assertively bittered and generously dry hopped. The English Bitter has an ideal balance of malt, hop and fermentation character. The brewmaster Rob Tweet has been brewing here for some time and has done a great job capturing a consistent brew style. The food menu covers lunch and dinner, though leans towards soups/salads and sandwiches. When visiting, ask for Micheal Johns the bartender...he will help you out..:) *Has Growlers, and they were fly'in! Rating 1-10 (9)

  pembertn@bucknell.edu reports: Eske's was a real small, local 'watering hole'. I don't mean this in a derogatory way. The place was great. Real tasty IPA, and their berry beer is very berry and very good. Their stout was also good. And no commentary on Eske's is complete without mentioning the Green Chile Beer. Good stuff and not for the faint of heart. Suck down a couple of those puppies with the Patz (Their name for a burrito) and your well on your way to a real barn burner under your tonsils! The food is primarily in place merely as a compliment to the beer. Sort of like something to cleanse your palate for the next beer. Great place, great atmosphere, great beer. A little pricey but hey, it's a resort town.

  Chuck Sheldon, (skitime3@cs.com) reports:Located in the heart of downtown Taos, Eskes hides off to the northeast side of the street. This is the "local hangout" and for good reason! The bar itself is small, seating 4 though there is plenty of table seating. There is also another dining room adjoining the bar with larger tables. In the summer the patio is the place to be- The atmosphere is very laid back and relaxing.There were 6 microbrews on tap with 25 seasonals in rotation. The ones we tried were all are delicious...:) The Peach Naked Ale had a strong peach flavor with a light aftertaste/medium bodied and very fruity... (Wendy's pick of the day) ESB Eske's Special Bitter is an English style bitter that is very light and hoppy with a coffee aftertaste. Mesa Pale Ale is smooth with little aftertaste to speak of/very tasty, though not your typical IPA. Seco Stout is your classic Irish style stout but a little heavy for a hot NM summer day...better in the winter after ski time! The Artist Ale (my pick of the day) is an ordinary style english bitter and very smooth..:) The Taos Green Chile beer is "liquid green chile at your service!" Try this one first so you can use the others to put out the fire..:0 This particular Green Chile beer is made from NM Hatch green chile and is an award winner! The food is great (try the Club, covered in a honey-nut beer batter and grilled) and the Fatty (previously called the Patz, a JUMBO sized burrito) Eske is the brewmaster and owner and runs a fine establishment. If you get a chance to visit with him as we did, you will find he has found his calling...:) * Has Growlers Rating from 1-10 (10)
