Bo Belanger, Brewmaster
This English-style Brewpub operates out of the historic Soo Line Depot.
The Highly regarded Depot Restaurant shares the structure. A very social place,
the Railyard Pub has rapidly become a favorite for both locals and visitors to Lake
Superior's south shore. They brew a full slate of ales, porters, stouts and lagers
on premises, with limited bottlings available. Their first Brewmaster's dinner was
a smashing success with a five course meal of local delacies including trout cheek
scampi, maple smoked breast of duck w/cranberry honey sauce, Yukon golden potatoe
hash with wild rice, , twice baked New York Cheesecake with stout caramel and creme
analaise pale ale as well as porter for the duck , honey ale with the mixed greens
and seres granulax (smoked lake trout, marinated with sugar and salt and grilled)
in vinigarette sauce. Five courses, five specialty beers and a complimentry snifter
of single-malt scotch whisky afterwords to go with your cigar. Friend, it don't get
no better than this. Especially at 25 bucks. The evening included presentation on the
courses and presentation of the chefs. A good time was had by all and we finally shut
the place down at 2 a.m. with fervent promises to attend the second such event.

- (BP)The Angelic Brewery 322 W Johnson (608)257-2707
- A nice brewpub selling some cool glassware. The beers were fairly pedestrian: well made
and tasty, but nothing remarkable. On my visit the availabler beers were: Believer's Bitter, which
was a reasonably hoppy beer, but could have used a bit more complexity; Shakedown Nut Brown, a medium
body beer with a pleasant maltiness; Paradise Lost Porter: a good porter, but a bit thin; and Sinner's Stout: again
a beer that could have benefited from a bigger flavor profile. Overall, worth a look, but Great Dane is better.

- Fantastic little brewpub with great food to boot. On my visit, the beers were:
Pecks Pilsner: a hoppy (Saaz) pilsner, all around good beer; Crop Circle Wheat: a real hefe weizen, and quite a good one
with big bananna and clove overtones; Devil's Lake Red Lager: the plainest of the bunch, but a good bridge beer for the
uninitiated; Black Earth Porter: a big smoky porter that verges on stout. Excellent!; Potters Run IPA: A nice balanced but still
hoppy IPA. One of the better beers on the menu; Also featured were a specialty Christmas (spiced), and a nicely malty but slightly
under-hopped ESB. Overall, definitely the finest brewpub I've visited in Wisconsin.

- German style brewery turning out a number of regular and seasonal brews as well as some of the finest
soft-drinks you will ever encounter. Best among the beers are a hoppy special amber, a real live hefe weiss,
and a somewhat over carmely (due to the gas fired kettle, no doubt) pilsener. Seasonally available are such bonuses
as barleywines, oktoberfests, IPAs, bocks and the occasional imperial stout.
Soft Drinks include a great root-beer, an excellent cola, and the finest cream soda you will ever taste. Also a
genuine super-gingery ginger ale is available. Tours regularly, modest charge includes plenty of beer samples and free soda. Call ahead
for reservations.

downtown. Their Oktoberfest was very good. I had another after that
which was also good, but I don't remember which one. Could have had

The food was also very good. I had a Scotch Egg (sorry arteries, too
good to pass up) and a grilled chicken and pasta dish, again the
memory is cloudy.

Great micro which turns out a variety of beers including a fantastic "Snowshoe Ale," which is
reddish and clear, with a hoppy nose and quite a hoppy overall flavor but well represented in
the malt category as well. They also produce "Uff-Da Bock," a real live bock, with a reasonably
rich malty profile and roasty notes, and a alcoholic feel. They brew fruit beers, including
an Apple Ale dominated by a sort of baked apple flavor. Their Belgian Red (a cherry flavored beer
which I haven't had the chance to sample) recently won best American
brew in "Malt Advocate," which is a pretty high honor. Edel Pils is an ably brewed pisener, and Spotted Cow
a sort of american style wheat beer. They also brew a few other styles, but
I haven't had the pleasure of sampling them. Overall--well worth seeking out if you get the chance.
