10bbl brewery, serving gold, amber, brown and pale ales, as well as a stout.
Terry Sunday (terry@brewingnews.com reports:My choice at Jaxon's in El Paso, Texas, is the Black Jack Nitro Stout. It's
a lot like Guinness but more roasty, robust and complex. Brewer John
Pilhoefer crept up on the style over the last several batches, and it is
now consistent and excellent. I remember drinking John's first Pancho's
Porter when the brewery opened five years ago. It looked like an amber ale
(to avoid scaring away El Paso's Bud-Coors-Miller drinkers, I guess), but
it definitely showed promise. It has evolved nicely as well, and would be
my second choice if there's no stout. The seasonal 1998-vintage Barleywine
just ran out a few eeeks ago. I got the last 2/3 of a pint as the keg ran
dry, and it was outstanding to the last drop. I recently got served a
Cactus Jax Amber Ale by mistake (Jaxon's bar crew, with a few exceptions,
is not notoriously knowledgeable), and it wasn't bad either, although not a
style I would ever deliberately order.
